Congratulations to our Gold Awardees

    <dc:type>News</dc:type>

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout can achieve. The Gold Award is something that fulfills a need within a girl's community whether local or global, creates change, and is something that becomes ongoing. The project is more than a good service project—it encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. Only about 5 percent of all Girl Scouts earn this award each year.

Local High Schoolers Received President’s Volunteer Service Gold Award

    <dc:type>News</dc:type>

The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and to encourage more people to serve. The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.Recently, three Reading Girl Scouts who are all freshman at Reading Memorial High School were recognized by the President’s Council for their community service efforts. Kasey Cook, Mary Kate Kelley and Grace Stroman all received the Gold Award in recognition of more than 100 hours of community service in the past twelve months. The young ladies could be found in so many different venues around Reading as they earned the award. You might have seen them tending for an Adopt an Island, tutoring at the middle school, helping to host the Teacher Appreciation Breakfast, Running the Hoops for Heart Program, working at their churches, volunteering at the library, helping the Rotary Club, or volunteering as part of Reading Girl Scouts, to name a few.The scouts were honored at a ceremony during a recent Girl Scout event held in Plymouth, MA. Younger scouts from Reading were honored to be able to make the presentations of the Gold Awards to the older scouts. In the upcoming twelve months, Cook, Kelley and Stroman will continue their community service efforts and hope that other youngsters in Reading will join them. Children as young as five years old can earn the award.According to the President’s Council, recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service, encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation, and inspires others to make service a central part of their lives. The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard – measured by the number of hours of service over a 12-month period or during their entire lifetime.

CEO Advisory Group

    <dc:type>News</dc:type>

A great group of committed Girl Scouts ages 6-18 came together to meet with CEO Ruth N. Bramson and share their perspectives for the future. These 20 girl leaders are members of the new Girl Scouts of Eastern Mass CEO/Girl Advisory Committee. They met for the first time to share their ideas about Girl Scouts and their suggestions for where the new council should focus to recruit more girls and to meet the needs and expectations of girls today. The girls shared that they like Girl Scouting because it offers opportunities to do community service, meet new people, and have fun. They suggested we emphasize these themes in our recruitment. The girls, who came from throughout our service area, each applied to be members of Ruth’s new “cabinet” of girl advisors and will meet every other month throughout the year. The advisory committee members are pictured here with Ruth displaying our new ALL TogetHER campaign banner.

Here’s an example of one CEO/Girl Advisory application:

What is the main reason you want to participate?
To have fun, to learn and to help my community.

Why do you want to be on the CEO’s Girl Advisory Committee?
To learn more about Girl Scouts and to help it to grow and improve.

September 27th Membership Celebration... A Huge Success!

    <dc:type>News</dc:type>

Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts celebrated Girl Scout Day in Massachusetts with more than 50 fabulous registration events taking place that day. The proclamation of Girl Scout Day from Governor Patrick traveled from site to site with our GSEM CEO, Ruth Bramson. Children and parents had a great time, dove into fun projects, danced to great tunes, and overall displayed true Girl Scout energy and pride at all the events. Lots of new girls and volunteers registered, further expanding our ever-growing Girl Scout family. This rainy day brightened by our great Girl Scouts at registrations events throughout eastern Massachusetts including Brockton Rox Stadium, Camp Kiwanis in Lynn and Curtis Hall Community Center in Jamaica Plain. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Visit photo gallery ...

144 golfers filled the carts for a glorious day of fun, food and friendship. The tournament was a great success, thanks to the support of friends, Board, staff and corporations who lent their time, talent and funds to a great day. This was our most successful tournament to date, and our appreciation goes out to all ... with a special nod to the weatherman!
