April is Celebrate Diversity Month!

This month, we encourage you to honor the things that make us special as individuals— our differences! Absorb the beauty of your community and the unique experiences of those around you as you respectfully observe a culture different from your own. A whole new world may be closer than you think.
Where did Celebrate Diversity Month (CDM) come from?
CDM started in 2004 to recognize and honor the diversity all around us. During this month, we challenge ourselves and others to broaden our worldviews and learn about different cultures, regions, and beliefs.
What does Diversity mean to Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts?
- At GSEMA, we believe diversity is a fact. Each individual is unique and we understand that each one of us brings something different to every space we enter.
- Diversity results from identities. We each have countless identities within the realms of race, age, gender, socioeconomic status, disability and ability, citizenship status, language, and so many more! They work together to make us who we are.
Why is it important to celebrate diversity?
Celebrating diversity helps to sustain inclusion and belonging for all within a given space. In turn, that allows us to feel seen, valued, and empowered to show up as our true selves.
How can you celebrate diversity this month?
- Watch a film or documentary about a culture you aren't familiar with.
- Learn a new language, and challenge yourself to engage in small talk or find a restaurant where you can practice your new skills by ordering!
- Try a new cuisine! We have food from all over the world here in eastern Massachusetts!
